Southwest Allen County School Corporation (SACS) operates a comprehensive special education program designed for exceptional individuals,
preschool-high school, that fosters inclusive educational climates where individuality and diversity are respected, honored and celebrated.
Our Mission
The Southwest Allen County Schools (SACS) Special Education Department believes in providing a flexible system of leadership and support that mobilizes resources and services to assist students in achieving the same educational goals aligned with the district’s mission and vision for all students.
Our Goals
SACS is committed to the philosophy of the least restrictive environment (LRE). Whenever possible, students will attend school in their neighborhood with a continuum of supports and services enabling students to achieve their highest potential.
Our Programs
Operating in accordance with Indiana Article 7, SACS provides educational services for students with special education eligibility in programs preschool-high school. Programs supported are Early Childhood, Learning Centers (K-12), Skills Labs (K-12) and Special Needs (K-12). Most students in special education participate in a combination of general education and special education.
Determination of Eligibility for Special Education Services:
Eligibility is determined through an evaluation process aligned with state and local criteria. The Strategies for Student Success (SSS) team typically comprised of the principal, general and special education teachers, the school counselor, school psychologist and the parent(s) meet to review the student’s performance in the area(s) of concerns and existing data of educational interventions. An educational evaluation to determine the need for special education services may be made by the team. If the student is found to be eligible for special education services, the case conference committee develops the student’s Individual Education Program (IEP).
Non Public Services:
SACS provides services to eligible students at non-public school located within our district boundaries and home school students whose parents are SACS residents.
The Individuals with Disabilities Act 2004 (IDEA) guarantees the right to a free appropriate public education (FAPE) for students with disabilities. Legislation, regulations, guidance and other policy documents can be located here. Please note that in the U.S. the federal role in education is limited. As articulated in the Tenth Amendment, most education policy is decided at the state and local levels. In Indiana, Article 7 contains Indiana's Special Education rules:
